By now, you've purchased enough body scrubs to know they are NOT all the same. The experience will vary from product to product. Some contain ZERO lasting benefits and wash right off the skin and down the drain along with your investment. It's frustrating and disappointing, to say the least.
Let's put an end to that by looking at the ingredients that will make a HUGE difference when they are in your body scrub.
Skin is the largest organ of the human body. It goes through a process of shedding dead skin cells is called desquamation. We are carrying around dead skin cells all over our body. Kind of gross, right! The skin you see now will be gone in about a month because our body gets rid of 30,000 to 40,000 old skin cells every day!
When these dead skin cells reach the top of the skin, it's a good practice to remove them to allow the skin to look and feel clearer, brighter, and healthier.
Using a body scrub every few days expedites the process and allows the skin to breathe better, feel softer, and resist disease.
So using a body scrub will improve your skin's ability to protect you and look more youthful longer.
Pumice is a powerful exfoliant, and it should be among the top 3 ingredients. It does an excellent job of removing dead skin cells, while other product ingredients help to smooth and soften. Pumice is the cooled, hardened, and sudsy part of volcanic lava. Using pumice in a scrub saves you from having to sanitize a pumice stone regularly.
TIP: Jojoba beads alone are not enough to exfoliate the body. Jojoba beads are great for the delicate skin on the face. The spherical shape is actually hardened jojoba esters into spherical form. Jojoba mimics the structure of the skin. Some fear using jojoba beads on the face because of rumored micro-tears. That is fake news. Jojoba beads cannot tear the skin at all. As such, these beads provide very light topical exfoliation. The biggest benefit to jojoba beads is helping skin hold moisture longer as the botanical extract from the beads is absorbed into the skin and mimics skin sebum, and is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores.)
Skin is exposed to environmental toxins on a daily basis, from sun exposure to poor diets and neglect. Using a body scrub with antioxidant properties will fight cancer-causing free radicals and help skin protect you from disease. I love antioxidants like kukui nut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, aloe, green/white teas. A list of antioxidants for the skin.
When the skin presents with rough patches, eczema, or rashes, it's important to provide some anti-inflammatory relief against itching and skin irritation. Ingredients like kukui nut oil, aloe, green and white teas, horse chestnut extract, seaweed extract, and caffeine are among my faves. A report on anti-inflammatory skincare ingredients.
Polyphenols offer therapeutic level protective properties for the skin. Examples of skin barrier protectors with polyphenols are kukui nut oil, green and white teas, olive oil, jojoba beads, horse chestnut extract. A report on skin barrier effects of some plant oils.
Vitamins A, C, D, and E are very nourishing to the skin in a topical formula from sources such as kukui nut, avocado, olive oil, and all-natural vitamins (not synthetic) forms. A report on Micronutrients in Skin Health.
The bottom line is to take the time to read the label BEFORE you make a purchase, and you'll get better results.
That's why my favorite body scrub EVER is TEAriffic Antioxidant Body Scrub. It's loaded with quality ingredients. 98% natural, with 70% of the ingredients organic. Less than 2% of the ingredients maintain the stability and preservation of the product.

Trying to keep our skin healthy and glowing is a lifelong process. It protects us, shields us, and defines us in a lot of ways! But every layer of the skin acts as our armor in a different way. On the very top, we all have a "skin barrier" that requires its own care for long-term health.
