Everything You Need to Know About Exosomes in Anti-Aging Skincare

Everything You Need to Know About Exosomes in Anti-Aging Skincare

Key points:

  • What skin care exosomes are and how they work in the body.
  • The questions I’m asked most about topical stem cells.
  • Why I believe this advanced technology is the skin care of the future.

As a Master Esthetician of 25 years, my success is reliant on results. I keep a close eye on advances in skincare technology. When I say “technology”, I’m not only referring to skincare devices, but also clinically proven topicals. One of the topicals at the top of my list is exosomes.

Exosomes are the skincare of the future, and the future is here now! In fact, the topical line I use and sell has been available since 2017, and it works like a dream, rejuvenating a wide range of anti-aging concerns and skin conditions. They’re faster and easier than injectables and are so advanced that they rival and surpass many of the top treatments. That said, there are a lot of misconceptions about exosomes in skin care. Below is what I’m asked most about this revolutionary advancement in reparative skincare.

WHAT ARE EXOSOMES?

Exosomes are cellular signalers. Cells are intelligent, and they naturally produce and release reparative molecules (aka. vestibules) throughout your body. These vestibules facilitate cell-to-cell communication and contain everything the body needs to self-repair: stem cells, peptides, copper peptides, lipids, and more. As the vestibules float around your body, they release what you need where you need it, activating localized and widespread cellular repair. As we age, production of these reparative signalers slows, which is one of many reasons fine lines and wrinkles accelerate.

WHAT ARE EXOSOMES IN SKIN CARE?

Skin care exosomes are a part of a growing and advanced range of medical-grade skincare actives, aka. cosmeceuticals. Cosmeceutical products are scientifically proven to promote tissue repair and regeneration at the cellular level. As a naturally derived molecule, exosomes are rapidly recognized and absorbed into deeper layers of your skin. They aren’t just for anti-aging, but also for wound care.

ARE EXOSOMES STEM CELLS?

Yes, and no. Some people refer to exosomes as topical stem cells, because they’re a type of stem cell therapy. In addition to stem cells, these molecules contain lipids, peptides, copper peptides, and everything else your cells need to activate tissue repair and regeneration. So, instead of applying lipids and peptides topically, you can apply exosome-infused products.

WHAT ARE "RESIDENT STEM CELLS'?

One of the misconceptions about exosomes in topical products is how the stem cells used to produce them are harvested, which varies by skincare line. Resident stem cells are harvested from adult skin cells. This means that they’re not lab-made or harvested from embryos, fat, bone, platelets, or plants.

DO EXOSOMES HAVE TO BE INJECTED?

No! This advanced skincare technology falls into 2 categories: injectables and topicals. With the utmost respect, I’ve heard several dermatologists state that for exosomes to be effective, they must be injected. While I agree that most exosomes topicals aren’t effective, the skincare line I use (NeoGenesis) is highly effective.

  • Injectables: Injectables are effective but expensive. You’ll need a series of treatments (typically 2 to 4) with multiple injections per session. Expect minor to moderate swelling and inflammation at the injection sites. Follow-up sessions are required annually.
  • Topicals: Topicals are applied daily in the comfort of your own home, with zero inflammation or downtime. NeoGenesis costs more than many other stem cell and exosomes skincare brands, but a full year of products costs less than 1 round of injectables.

ARE EXOSOMES SAFE?

Exosomes are considered generally safe and effective for all skin types. What you must be mindful of are the other actives in the topicals you use. NeoGenesis harvests their reparative molecules from ethically sourced human skin cells (aka. resident stem cells) from the largest FDA-approved human tissue bank in the United States. You can’t just chop up stem cells and add them to skincare products, because the stem cells will die. NeoGenesis’s patented technology is the only topical product line I’ve found that maintains live molecules.

FROM INFLAMED TO CALM IN 20 MINUTES

I’ve never had anyone’s skin flare up after applying NeoGenesis. In fact, quite the contrary. It’s my go-to for calming sensitive or irritated skin and soothing skin after microneedling. In just 20 minutes, skin transitions from red to calm. It’s also what I suggest to clients after laser therapy, chemical peels, sunburns, extreme wind or weather, harsh skincare treatments, or prolonged use of retinoids and  inflammaging prescription topicals. You can even use it with retinoids, just alternate the times of day. Maybe apply exosomes in the morning and retinol in the evening.

WHY EXOSOMES ARE THE SKINCARE OF THE FUTURE?

What I mean when I say that stem cells are the future of skin care is that I believe they’ll transition from a rare active ingredient to a standard one. They’ll be infused in anti-aging formulations for every step of the skincare routine, something NeoGenesis has been doing for years!

WHY NEOGENESIS IS THE ONLY EXOSOMES PRODUCT LINE ON MY TREATMENT BAR?

The NeoGenesis team is led by Dr. Greg Maguire, a leading stem cell expert with over 30 years of researching and formulating stem cell-infused pharmaceuticals. What began as neuroscience research, evolved into exploring how exosomes can regenerate and repair skin, hair, radiation burns, wounds, and more.

Their patented S²RM® technology uses resident stem cells, which are immediately recognized by your body and absorbed to renew your skin. So far, it’s the only topical exosomes product I’ve found that works. It’s a dream for rejuvenating aging skin, and one of the top reparative products on the market. In addition to efficacy, NeoGenesis gives back, gifting their skin-renewing products to oncology patients.

WHAT NEOGENESIS PRODUCT TO TRY FIRST?

I suggest applying at least one  NeoGenesis topical product per day. Exfoliation is super important to ensure optimal cellular repair. If you have too much dead skin buildup, it can’t absorb into your skin. It’s also helpful if your skin is a bit damp when applying NeoGenesis products. In addition to renewing aging skin, NeoGenesis has options for lash regrowth, hair regrowth, and whole-body skin rejuvenation. Below are my top picks for those new to this scientific advance in anti-aging skin care.

Moisturizing Mist

NeoGenesis Moisturizing Mist is an excellent exosomes starter product. It’s a versatile formulation that can be used to balance stripped skin that feels tight or dry. You can also use it to set your makeup or spray on during the day as a hydrating skin barrier.

Intensive Moisturizer

If your skin is parched, you need to restore barrier function, or are looking to upgrade to a powerful anti-aging daily moisturizer,  NeoGenesis Intensive Moisturizer is the ideal daily moisturizer. This formulation is thin enough that you can apply it around your eyes.

Eye Serum

If you have dark circles, puffy eyes, or deep wrinkles, this powerful serum will renew your aging eyes. In addition to S²RM®,  NeoGenesis Eye Serum contains Sodium Hyaluronate Butyrate to hydrate the deep layers.

Advanced Recovery

If your skin is damaged or severely inflamed, I suggest  NeoGenesis Recovery Serum. It’s formulated with 70% S²RM® to accelerate healing. Once skin heals, you can transition to a product with a lower percentage of S²RM®. This product is also a top pick for radiation burns.
