I'm often asked, "Do I need a special night cream?" The answer begins by establishing the origin of this concept. Once upon a time the school of thought was because a day cream contains SPF and a night cream does not, we need a special night cream.
However because today's skincare offers us so much more in the way of layering products with serums or ampoules, it's more about using a nighttime skincare routine verses a special nighttime cream.
A nighttime skincare routine involves a double cleanse to remove makeup and the grime of the day. Depending on your skincare needs, for example anti-aging for mature skin or preventative for younger skin, the cleanse is followed by a serum or two to address any special needs. Use your favorite device(s) to boost collagen and once again, treat your special needs. The final step is applying moisturizer or a barrier renewal cream that serves as a moisturizer.
If your nighttime skincare routine leaves your skin feeling dewy when you wake up in the morning, you're all set. You don't need to make any changes. But if you find your skin looks or feels dry or parched, then I have some recommendations.
In the wintertime the air is much dryer so using an oil diffuser without the oil by your bedside to release some moisture into the air. You can also use a humidifier, and this might be enough to add the moisture you need.
If skin is severely dry, the key will be to add the right amount of moisture but not too much so you don't cause breakouts. Slathering on an oily, heavy cream is not the solution. In fact, you may clog your pores. Try light layers until you get the perfect amount for your skin.
You can layer more hydration using ampoules like HYAL Moisture Solution. This is a lighter weight product that is layered over your serum(s), so it's unlikely to cause breakouts or clog pores. Start by adding 2 or 3 layers to see if that's all your skin needs. Always finish your nighttime routine with moisturizer.
Many love doing the 7 Skins Treatment right before a holiday party for dewy skin. You can do this once a week for a boost of moisture as well.
Remember, your pillowcase is going to soak up some of the surface oils and even product that is on the outer layer of skin. Be sure to change your pillowcase often. Using an antimicrobial pillowcase may be helpful but research is still in progress to determine if they are truly effective. Common sense dictates we change them at least once a week. More often, if a lot of product is getting absorbed by the pillowcase.
