Help! Which Mask Do I Need?

Facial masks are a delightful way of pampering ourselves and an important part of our skincare. However, the mask you choose matters. Just like other skincare products, the active ingredients must be considered and should support your skincare goals. If you've visited the beauty section of a department store, facial masks tend to be very inexpensive. But is this a situation in which you get what you pay for?

Yes, it is. Unfortunately, OTC (over the counter from a department store) masks have a very low percentage of active ingredients. They don't produce much in the way of immediate or lasting benefits. 

Look for masks with a higher percentage of active ingredients and more advanced formulations. They might cost a little more but they will produce much better results. 

The use of a facial mask should compliment your skincare goals. This means you'll choose a mask based on the ingredients that support the results you desire. The guide below spotlights a few of my favorites.

Facial Mask Tips

Using a facial mask is pretty straight forward but here's a few important tips.

• Always apply a facial mask to clean skin.
• If the mask doesn't offer exfoliation, you can exfoliate prior to using the mask. This will allow ingredients to penetrate better.
• Do not cleanse *after* you apply the mask. Simply continue with your skincare routine. The only exception is if applying a clay-based mask. Use a lukewarm, damp cloth to gently wipe off a clay-based mask but do not use cleanser.
• Your skin will soak up all the goodness of a facial mask in 15-20 minutes so there really is no benefit to leaving it on longer. 
• It's best practice to apply hydrating masks in the morning and exfoliating masks at night.
